Many people who continue to have an unnecessary phobia for the dentist shudder at the very mention of the name. But the going rate of technologies today just goes to show that they had nothing to fear in the first place. Anyhow, dental handpieces are also known as dental drills. And by dint of its very name, these instruments will always be handheld medical devices specifically used by the dentist.
Perhaps calling this dental piece a drill is not entirely appropriate. Perhaps it’s just the lingo or the jargon that dentists like to use. Because the dental handpiece is quite the versatile instrument as it turns out. It can be used for a number of purposes. For instance, it can be used to remove decay. It can be used to polish fillings. It can also be used to alter a prostheses. The dental hand piece is an intricate instrument.
It is made up of a number of internal mechanical components. They all mount up to being able to initiate a rotational force and provide power to the cutting instrument, also known as a dental burr. Of course, the seasoned dentist will have a variety of instruments at his disposal, not too many, mind you. He’ll be selecting an instrument or two all depending on the procedure that he has diagnosed needs to be performed.
In order to ensure hygiene and safety for the patient, the dentist does need to have a light source and cooling water spray system close to hand. And these days, it is not uncommon for the sophisticated handheld set to be directly attached to these essential components. The light source is necessary in order to provide high visibility, accuracy and the all-round success of the dental procedure.
